Thiruvananthapuram, July 29 -- Amoebic meningoencephalitis, which has a global fatality rate of 97%, has been reduced to just 23% in Kerala.

With the state's proactive disease surveillance efforts, both Nipah and amoebic meningoencephalitis have been identified and addressed in their early stages, said Kerala Health Minister Veena George.

Another major achievement is the reduction of the Nipah virus fatality rate-from a global average of 70% to just 33% in Kerala, she added.

Highlighting the state's overall healthcare performance, the minister said Kerala also has the lowest maternal mortality rate in the country and that continuous efforts are underway to reduce it further.
