Srinagar, July 25 -- Mutton dealers in Kashmir have suspended the import of livestock from outside the Union Territory, protesting against alleged extortion by toll contractors at Punjab's Shambhu and Madhopur border checkpoints.
The move is likely to disrupt the Valley's meat supply in the coming days.
Addressing a press conference, General Secretary of the Wholesale Mutton Dealers Association, Mehrajuddin Ganai, said the decision was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders.
"This is not a unilateral decision. We have spoken to all major players in the trade. Our suppliers in Rajasthan, Sikar, Delhi, and Ambala have already been informed," Ganai said.
