Bengaluru, March 10 -- The Karnataka government on Tuesday introduced a Bill in the state legislature to amend the Karnataka Gram Swaraj and Panchayat Raj Act with the objective of conducting forthcoming zilla and taluk panchayat elections using paper ballots instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

The move comes ahead of scheduled rural local body elections this year.

The proposed amendment seeks to grant legal backing for reverting to paper ballots, a system previously used in local body polls before the adoption of EVMs.

Government sources said the intent behind the shift is to enhance the credibility and transparency of the voting process in grassroots democratic institutions.
