Bengaluru, March 3 -- A political row erupted today after Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi questioned the Centre's stand over the reported death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei, drawing a sharp response from BJP leaders.

In a statement issued in New Delhi, Sonia Gandhi reportedly termed the Centre's silence as "deeply disappointing" and said India, with its long-standing civilisational ties with Iran, must articulate a principled position in line with its traditional foreign policy values of sovereignty, non-interference and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

She also expressed concern over the escalating tensions in West Asia and their potential impact on regional stability and global energy markets.
