Bengaluru, Aug. 18 -- In a historic move, the Karnataka Assembly today passed the Karnataka Devadasi (Prevention, Prohibition, Relief and Rehabilitation) Bill, which not only seeks to abolish the centuries-old Devadasi system but also makes biological fathers legally responsible under a special law, with provision for conclusive proof of paternity. The legislation, tabled by State Women and Child Welfare Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar, aims to liberate Devadasi women from exploitation, empower their children to overcome social stigma, and ensure comprehensive rehabilitation measures by the state.
