Nagpur, Dec. 21 -- A recount of votes has been ordered in Kamptee Municipal Council in Nagpur district after the Congress party challenged the narrow 116-vote victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ajay Agrawal, election officials said .

Counting was underway across 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Maharashtra, with the Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party and the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena , maintaining a strong lead in many areas, officials noted.

However, in Kamptee, BJP nominee Ajay Agrawal was declared elected president of the council, but his Congress rival Shakur Nagani lodged a formal objection to the result, alleging discrepancies in the counting.
