Chandigarh, Dec. 17 -- Punjab Police shot dead one of the accused involved in the murder of kabaddi player and promoter Rana Balachauria in an encounter near Lalru on the Ambala highway in Mohali district. The encounter left two police personnel injured, officials said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Harpinder Singh alias Middu, was cornered by police teams near Lalru after receiving specific intelligence inputs. According to police, Middu opened fire at the police party using a 9mm Zigana pistol, injuring two personnel.

Police retaliated, and Middu sustained critical bullet injuries. He was later declared dead.
