New Delhi, Oct. 24 -- The union government has formally initiated the process to appoint the next Chief Justice of India (CJI), as the current Chief Justice B. R. Gavai is set to retire on November 23.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has written to CJI Gavai, requesting him to recommend his successor, marking the start of the official procedure.

According to established convention and the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit for the post is recommended for appointment as the next Chief Justice.
