Kolkata, Sept. 15 -- Justice Soumen Sen, the senior-most judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice following Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam's retirement.

The union Law Ministry issued a notification today announcing his appointment in accordance with Article 223 of the Constitution of India.

Justice Sivagnanam's retirement created a vacancy at the top of the Calcutta High Court, and Justice Sen was entrusted with the role by virtue of seniority.

However, just last week, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Sen's appointment as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
