London, Sept. 21 -- Veteran television presenter John Stapleton, a distinguished figure in British broadcasting for more than four decades, has died peacefully in hospital at the age of 79, his agent confirmed.

From the corridors of local newsrooms in Oldham to the studios of the BBC and ITV, Stapleton carved a reputation as a broadcaster of rare composure and adaptability.

He reported on the Kosovo war, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the Iraq War, work that earned him the Royal Television Society's Presenter of the Year award in 2003.
