Ranchi, Dec. 12 -- The Jharkhand High Court on Thursday dismissed the petition of lifer Anil Sharma seeking premature release on health grounds.

Sharma, convicted in the 1999 Birsa Munda Jail murder case, had approached the court citing a heart ailment and requesting relief from his ongoing life sentence. However, a single bench of Justice Anil Kumar Choudhary rejected the plea, granting no concession to the petitioner.

On January 22, 1999, while lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail, Sharma along with other inmates brutally killed fellow prisoner Bhoma Singh. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment, and has been serving his term at Ranchi jail for the past 28 years.
