Ranchi, Nov. 7 -- BJP state president and Leader of the Opposition Babulal Marandi on Friday welcomed the resignation of Anurag Gupta as Jharkhand's Director General of Police (DGP), calling the development "long overdue" and urging the state government to consider giving Gupta a conciliatory, honourable posting to protect mutual interests.

Marandi said Chief Minister Hemant Soren had, "albeit belatedly, acted on our suggestion" by accepting Gupta's resignation and removing what he described as a "tainted, controversial and criminal-type" officer from the state's top police post.

He thanked the chief minister for the decision and said it spared the people of Jharkhand from further distress.
