Mumbai, June 10 -- On occasion of the 26th foundation day of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) on Tuesday, senior leader Jayant Patil expressed his intention to step down as the Maharashtra unit president.

NCP's 26th foundation day was celebrated on June 10. The NCP was founded on June 10, 1999.

Patil, a trusted confidant of party chief Sharad Pawar, has helmed the state unit for nearly seven years.

Speaking at Pune's Balgandharva Rang Mandir, Patil emphasised the need to provide opportunities to emerging leaders within the party.

"Pawar Saheb has given me many opportunities, including seven years as state president. Now, it is time to give a chance to new faces," he said.
