Tokyo, May 11 -- Three Chinese nationals have been arrested by Japanese police after thousands of protected hermit crabs were discovered in multiple suitcases on a Japanese holiday island, media reports said.
Three suspects, Liao Zhibin, Song Zhenhao, and Guo Jiawei, were arrested on Wednesday on the Amami Islands for allegedly possessing 160 kilograms (353 pounds) of live crustaceans, CNN reported.
According to police, a hotel worker in Amami, a city on the island of Amami Oshima, alerted environmental authorities after spotting something suspicious about the suitcases the three men had asked hotel staff to watch.
"They heard rustling sounds coming from a suitcase that was being held in storage," a police officer told CNN.
