Srinagar, March 17 -- A gunbattle erupted on Monday between militants and security forces in a forest area in the Handwara sub-district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

They said the encounter broke out in the Krumhoora Zachaldara area during a cordon and a search operation following an input about militant presence in the area.

"Police and security forces are on the job," the J&K police spokesman said.

This is the first encounter in nearly two months in Kashmir. On January 20-21, a soldier lost his life in the last gunfight in north Kashmir's Sopore sub-district. The militants, however, managed to escape from the area.
