Srinagar, Oct. 23 -- The autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly began today with members paying glowing tributes to former Governor Satya Pal Malik, the last governor of the erstwhile state and several other legislators who passed away since the previous session.

Malik, who served as Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, oversaw the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two union Territories on August 5, 2019 - a development that remains one of the most consequential events in J&K's political history. He passed away on August 5, 2025, exactly six years after the move.
