New Delhi, June 16 -- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar compared notes on the unfolding security and political situation in and around the Gulf region in an array of meetings in the Qatari capital Doha on Tuesday.

On his way back from Nairobi, the EAM met US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad and "exchanged perspectives" on Afghanistan and the region.

The meeting is significant when seen in the context of the deteriorating security situation in the conflict-wracked South Asian country in the wake of the US drawdown that is scheduled to get over by September 11.

And there were reports that India has for the first time opened channels of communication with the Taliban leaders, including Mullah Baradar.
