Mumbai, Nov. 3 -- Jain monk Nilesh Chandra today begun an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan here demanding the reopening of the pigeon feeding shelter in Dadar and other similar facilities across Mumbai. The protest has drawn the participation and support of fellow Jain monks and community members concerned about the welfare of pigeons in the city.
Chandra stated that the Jain community has a longstanding tradition rooted in non-violence and compassion for all living beings, and expressed distress over the removal and closure of pigeon shelters at locations including Dadar. According to him, pigeons have been left hungry and vulnerable because the designated feeding spots have been shut down, creating hardship for the birds.
