Paris, Sept. 24 -- Claudia Cardinale, the Tunis-born actress whose career spanned more than six decades and who became a defining face of Italian and international cinema, has passed away at the age of 87 years.

Her death occurred in Neumours, near Paris, her family confirmed on September 23.

Born on April 15, 1938 in Tunis to Sicilian parents, Cardinale embodied cosmopolitan grace from an early age, growing up fluent in French, Arabic and Sicilian. She got her big break when she won the 'Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia' in 1957, which came with a trip to the Venice Film Festival, where she caught the attention of various film producers.
