Istanbul, April 18 -- Istanbul Airport has reached a "milestone" with the launch of simultaneous operations on three fully independent runways, significantly enhancing aviation efficiency in the region, according to authorities.

The system, which enables simultaneous takeoffs and landings, was put into operation at 10:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Thursday. With this system, Istanbul Airport became the first in Europe and the second in the world after the United States to operate with three runways, the semi-official Anadolu Agency reported.
