Thiruvananthapuram, July 27 -- Fishing vessels in Kerala are being equipped with transponders developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to enhance the safety of fishermen.

The installation drive, which began in March this year in Ernakulam district, has already seen over 300 transponders installed in fishing boats, with the support of both the central and state governments.

These satellite-based transponders provide real-time information such as weather alerts (including high waves and strong winds), potential fishing zones, warnings to prevent crossing international maritime boundaries, details of the nearest harbor, and the distance to the harbor.
