Beirut, June 4 -- Israeli strikes on southern Syria have caused casualties and significant material damage, Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing the country's foreign ministry.

The ministry strongly condemned the Israeli shelling of villages and settlements in Daraa province, which caused significant human and material losses, the report said on Tuesday.

The attack is a gross violation of Syria's sovereignty and increases tension in the region at a time when de-escalation and peaceful solutions are especially needed, the report added.
