Tehran, Nov. 5 -- Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, taking a dig at the US, praised the 1979 seizure of the US embassy in Tehran during the Iranian Revolution, calling it a defining moment in the country's history and a source of national pride.

The revolution ended the pro-US monarchy in the country and transformed Iran into a theocratic Islamic Republic, resulting in Tehran's long-standing bilateral hostility towards Washington, which continues to date.

Addressing students and officials at a ceremony commemorating the anniversary, Khamenei said the event should be understood "from both a historical and an identity-based perspective".
