Tehran, Aug. 4 -- The Iranian parliament's economic commission passed a motion at a meeting on Sunday to remove four zeros from Iran's national currency the rial, the official news agency IRNA reported, quoting commission chairman Shamseddin Hosseini.

The move, aimed at streamlining financial transactions, revived a shelved plan by the administration of former President Hassan Rouhani in 2019, according to Hosseini.

According to the IRNA report, Iran's national currency would continue to be called the rial, and one rial would be equivalent to 10,000 at the current value and be subdivided into 100 gherans.

The removal of four zeros from the rial has yet to be approved by Iran's parliament and the Constitutional Council.
