Los Angeles, Dec. 28 -- Bahram Beyzaie, the distinguished Iranian filmmaker, playwright and cultural thinker whose work profoundly shaped modern Iranian cinema and theatre, has died, sources close to him confirmed on Sunday.
He was 87.
He died on his birthday - that is dated on December 27 - in the United States after suffering complications from cancer, independent journalist Mansour Jahani confirmed.
Beyzaie's 1985 masterpiece, "Bashu, the Little Stranger, was screened at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, where it received the Venice Classics Award for Best Restored Film, an honour that reaffirmed its enduring global significance decades after its release.
