Tehran, Dec. 13 -- Iran has seized a foreign oil tanker allegedly carrying six million litres of smuggled diesel in the Gulf of Oman, Iranian state media reported on Friday.
Iran, which has some of the world's lowest fuel prices due to heavy subsidies and the sharp depreciation of its national currency, has been grappling with rampant fuel smuggling-both over land to neighbouring countries and by sea to Gulf Arab states.
Confirming the seizure, Mojtaba Ghahramani, Head of the Judiciary in Hormozgan Province, said the tanker was intercepted in Iranian territorial waters near Jask as part of an operation targeting regional fuel-smuggling networks.
