Tehran, March 19 -- Iran is considering imposing transit fees on vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, signalling a sharper assertion of control over the strategic waterway following recent US and Israeli attacks on its energy infrastructure in the Gulf.

Somayeh Rafiei, a lawmaker in Iran's parliament, said that officials are already drafting a legislation that would require countries using the strait for shipping, energy transit and food supplies to pay tolls.

"In the event that the Strait of Hormuz is used as a secure route. countries will be required to pay tolls and taxes to the Islamic Republic of Iran," she said, adding that a broader "security tax" could also be introduced.
