Jaunpur, Nov. 22 -- An inmate lodged in Jaunpur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh on charges of dowry death died by suicide on Friday, triggering protests from his family members, who alleged foul play involving the victim's in-laws and jail staff.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Goldy Gupta, Mohammad Sufiyan (24), a resident of Tarapur Takiya under Shahkot police station limits, was sent to jail on October 27 after being accused of murdering his wife over dowry. On Friday, he was found hanging inside the jail premises.
Authorities stated that Sufiyan had knowledge of electrical repairs and was often assigned related tasks inside the prison. He reportedly went to the generator room, where he hanged himself in isolation.
