Chennai, Nov. 2 -- Fourth seed Indonesia's Janice Tjen annexed her maiden singles title in theWTA Chennai Open Tennis tournament at the SDAT stadium here this evening.

She became the first Indonesian to win the WTA title in two decades.

In a keenly contested final, she capped a remarkable year, defeating Australia's Kimberly Birrell6-4, 6-3 to clinch her maiden WTA singles title.

Just a year ago, the 23-year-old was ranked No. 573 in the world. Today she continued her rapidrise on the WTA Tour with a straight set victory in the title clash.

Both players contested their second career finals and seeking a first WTA title.

Tjen took charge early, claiming the opening set 6-4 before racing to a 4-0 lead in the second.
