Chennai, Oct. 13 -- The Indian fast breeder nuclear power programme will reach a major milestone this week.

The country's first breeder reactor, the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) will reach the historic milestone of40 years of successful operation on October 18.

It was on that day on October 18, 1985, the FBTR went critical.

However, it is learnt that no major commemorative event is planned by the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research(IGCAR) at Kalpakkam, about 70 km from here, except a small get-together of its current and former Directors.

The FBTR is a 40MW-thermal/ 13.6 MW-electrical, loop type, sodium cooled fast reactor using a mixture of Plutoniumcarbide and uranium carbide as the fuel.
