Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 22 -- Ernakulam General Hospital is set to create medical history by performing India's first heart transplant at a district-level hospital, marking a major milestone for Kerala's public healthcare system.

The heart of S. Shibu (46), a native of Chiraykkara, Idavattom in Kollam district, who was declared brain-dead following a road accident, is being transplanted to a 22-year-old woman from Nepal. The recipient, an orphan suffering from a congenital heart disease, received the organ with special permission from the court.
