Thiruvananthapuram, July 19 -- Every year, over 1 lakh new cases of vitiligo are diagnosed in India. Although the condition can occur at any age, it is more common before the age of 30.

"Nearly 1.2 per cent of the population in Kerala is affected by vitiligo, compared to the global average of 0.5 per cent to 1 per cent, necessitating a massive awareness campaign to curb the rising incidence of the condition," Dr Naresh Purohit, Advisor, National Mental Health Programme, said today.

There is a social stigma attached to vitiligo, which affects the societal fabric, and, the noted epidemiologist added that nearly 1.2 per cent of the population in Kerala is affected by vitiligo, against a global average of 0.5 per cent to 1 per cent.
