Chennai, Oct. 14 -- India's nuclear power programme is expected to witness two milestone events sometime this week.
While one event is sure to happen - 40 years of successful operation of India's first fast breeder reactor, the 13.6 MWe Fast BreederTest Reactor (FBTR)- on October 18, the other, loading of the fuel in the 500MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) is in thehands of the sectoral regulator.
Officials in the nuclear power sector expect the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to give its nod for loading fuel in PFBR.
Interestingly the 13.6MW FBTR is the forerunner for the 500MW PFBR. Both the units are in Kalpakkam about 70km from Chennai.
