New Delhi, Sept. 4 -- India has asked to participate in the Malacca Straits Patrol, a patrol jointly conducted by Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand over one of the world's busiest shipping channels.

The issue was raised during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore PM Lawrence Wong here today.

India cited its "contiguous" connectivity to the Malacca Straits due the Andaman and Nicobar Islands being close to the key waterway and the Andaman Sea linking to the strait, and has asked to be allowed to participate.

The issue is under consideration, said Secretary East P Kumaran at a briefing here.
