Gopalganj (Bangladesh), Dec. 25 -- : An independent candidate Tapas Halder (43) was arrested on Tuesday while collecting nomination papers for Bangladesh's Gopalganj-3 constituency ahead of the national parliamentary elections.

According to police, Halder was arrested as a suspect in a case related to creating havoc in the Wapdar Hat area on the Poysarhat-Gopalganj regional road. He was later produced before the court and sent to jail.

Tapas Halder was earlier associated with Chhatra League politics during his student days at Dhaka University and served as a member of the organisation's central committee from 2006 to 2011. However, his associates said he has not held any political post for the last 14 years.
