Chennai, Aug. 25 -- In a major step towards strengthening biodiversityconservation efforts and in Tamil Nadu's first, Chief Minister M. K. Stalintoday released the City Biodiversity Index of Chennai.

It is the first City Biodiversity Index to be unveiled in Tamil Nadu as aframework to evaluate and benchmark urban biodiversity.

Releasing the Index, Mr Stalin announced that five more cities in TamilNadu will develop the City Biodiversity Index.

The City Biodiversity Index also known as the Singapore Index wasdeveloped in 2008 and endorsed at the Convention on BiologicalDiversity (COP 9).

The Index helps cities measure, evaluate, and strengthen biodiversityconservation through 23 globally recognized indicators.
