Washington, May 21 -- IMF First Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath has called on the United States to shrink its fiscal deficit and address its ballooning debt burden in a Wednesday interview with the Financial Times.
"The US fiscal deficits are too large and they need to be brought down," she said.
Gopinath also insisted that "it should be that we have fiscal policy in the US that is consistent with bringing debt to GDP down over time."
On May 7, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the US government debt will keep growing in absolute terms.
Despite "very elevated" trade policy uncertainty, Gopinath noted positive steps such as US President Donald Trump's decision to scale back tariffs on China.
