Bengaluru, June 16 -- The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for coastal Karnataka, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in the region.

The alert, effective for June 16, has prompted authorities to prepare for potential waterlogging and localised flooding in low-lying areas.

District administrations across the coastal belt, particularly in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada, have been advised to stay vigilant as torrential rain continues to lash the region.

While neighbouring Kerala has announced closure of schools in several districts, Karnataka authorities are monitoring the situation and are expected to issue school closure directives if rainfall intensifies further.
