Shillong, Dec. 5 -- A committee appointed by the Meghalaya High Court said that illegal coal mining and transportation is continuing in the state, despite the government's assurance of stopping such illegal activities.

In his 34th interim report submitted before the High Court, the panel, headed by retired judge Brojendra Prasad Katakey, directed authorities to identity vulnerable areas/villages where illegal coal mining activities generally occur.

The committee also received new complaints relating to illegal mining activities in East and West Jaintia Hills districts as well as West Khasi Hills district. It also received a specific complaint from opposition Voice of the People Party legislator Brightstarwell Marbaniang about supposed ill...
