Hyderabad/Chandigarh, Feb. 17 -- The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) has condemned the blocking of the Vikatan magazine website for publishing a cartoon on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a statement issued here on Monday. IJU President K. Sreenivas Reddy and Secretary-General Balwinder Singh Jammu termed the action by the government a direct attack on media freedom.

Following a complaint from Tamil Nadu BJP Chief to the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the website of the popular magazine, went inaccessible, they said.

The IJU leaders said that cartoons are part of journalism as a powerful means to convey a lot of things to the public in one stroke and any hostility towards that is an attack on freedom of expression.
