Shimla, Dec. 26 -- Four days after the doctor-patient altercations at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, the situation escalated, severely hitting health services at the hospital as the doctors proceeded on mass casual leave on Friday.
Around 3,000 doctors, medical students, interns, and resident doctors protested the termination of senior resident Dr. Raghav Nerula by the state government on December 24.
The agitation at IGMC brought routine hospital services to a standstill, as resident doctors stayed away from regular duties, disrupting outpatient department (OPD) services and forcing the deferment of nearly 200 planned surgeries. Hospital sources said that only emergency care continued to function during the protest.
