Kolkata, Feb. 14 -- The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Saturday praised the West Bengal government for its handling of the Nipah virus situation, saying the state has worked "very well" in coordination with the Centre to prevent the spread of the infection.

ICMR Director General Rajiv Bahl, who was in Kolkata to unveil the bust of Padma Vibhushan awardee and pioneer of oral rehydration therapy Dilip Mahalanabis at the ICMR-NIRBI campus in Beleghata, commended the state's preparedness and response to Nipah.

Speaking on the virus, Bahl said Nipah infections were reported earlier in 2001 and 2007, but it would be incorrect to term the disease as highly contagious.
