Chennai, May 17 -- In a swift operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Saturday thwarted an attempt to smuggle 600 litres of petrol through sea off Gulf of Mannar (GoM) near Rameswaram and seized them from a boat and arrested three people.

A defence release said swiftly responding to an input from the Customs Department about suspicious activities in the GoM, the ICG Station Mandapam carried out a joint operation resulting in the seizure of about 600 liters of petrol, way beyond permissible limits, onboard an Indian Fishing Boat along with three crew members off the Musal Tivu, GoM.

Investigations by the Department of Customs is in progress.
