Kolkata, Dec. 29 -- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday strongly defended her record on secularism, saying she was often unfairly accused of "appeasement politics," even though she firmly believed in equal respect for all religions.

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Durga Angan project in the city's north eastern township, New Town, the Chief Minister said her politics was rooted in peaceful coexistence and cultural harmony.

"Many people blame me for appeasement politics. I am a true secularist. I believe in the peaceful coexistence of all religions," Banerjee said, underlining that she participates in festivals and religious observances across faiths.
