Hyderabad, Jan. 1 -- HYDRA's large-scale lake restoration drive has transformed several of the city's long-neglected and polluted water bodies into vibrant public spaces, with a number of them now set to host a three-day Kite Festival starting from January 11, an official said on Thursday.

Nearly 60 per cent of the city's lakes have vanished over the years, while many of the remaining ones were reduced to sewage-filled dumping grounds due to encroachments and neglect.

Residents had long avoided these areas as they became breeding centres for mosquitoes and disease. This was the scenario before HYDRA, the statutory body responsible for safeguarding public property and managing disasters in Hyderabad, began its intervention.
