Kathmandu, Dec. 6 -- Nepal Telecom has been mired in controversy over its proposal to acquire a new billing system, valued at around NPR 5 billion ($37 million), from China's Huwaei.
On March 18, Nepal Telecom - in which the government holds a majority stake - invited bids for a new billing system.
Of the two Chinese firms that applied, only Huawei passed the technical evaluation, immediately prompting concerns that the tender specifications were drafted to favour a single company. Huawei currently maintains Nepal Telecom's core network, local reports said.
Whale Cloud, the second bidder, failed the technical assessment, leaving Huawei as the sole qualified contender.
