Shimla, Sept. 2 -- The Himachal Pradesh Assembly today passed by voice vote a landmark legislation aimed at strengthening the Panchayati Raj system, ensuring transparency, and aligning state laws with the newly enacted criminal codes.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while presenting the Himachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Bill, 2025, said the new law was necessary to check corruption at the grassroots and to bring accountability to the functioning of Gram Panchayats.
He asserted that the legislation bars Gram Panchayat Pradhans found guilty of corruption from contesting elections again, thereby ensuring that transparency prevails in rural governance.
