Chandigarh, July 19 -- The Punjab Assembly has formed a 15-member special committee to review and strengthen the "Punjab Holy Scriptures (Protection) Bill 2025," which proposes 10 years to life imprisonment for sacrilege of sacred texts from all religions. Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar will chair the committee, which includes lawmakers, former ministers, and academicians.

Independent MLA Rana Inder Pratap Singh, while supporting the bill, raised concerns over its interpretation, stating that the term "holy scriptures" should be defined carefully in line with Supreme Court verdicts. He stressed that misuse of the term could lead to legal ambiguity.
