Bengaluru, Oct. 31 -- Hockey India has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Manuel Frederick, the legendary goalkeeper from the golden era of Indian hockey and a bronze medallist at the 1972 Munich Olympics. He was 78.

Frederick, who holds the distinction of being the first Keralite to win an Olympic medal, was widely admired for his fearless goalkeeping and commitment to the sport.

A native of Kannur district, he began his hockey journey with the Army's school team in Bengaluru before representing ASC, HAL, Services, Uttar Pradesh and the famed Mohun Bagan club.

Making his India debut in 1971, Frederick went on to play two World Cups - in the Netherlands (1973), where India won Silver, and in Argentina (1978). Fondly known as 'Tiger...
