Shimla, Oct. 24 -- The Supreme Court of India has overturned the Himachal High Court's decision that granted daughters in tribal areas ancestral property rights under the Hindu Succession Act.

The Supreme Court clarified in its decision that daughters in tribal areas of Himachal Pradesh do not have ancestral property rights under the Hindu Succession Act 1956.

It said that customary law and social customs will continue to apply in these areas. A division bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra delivered this decision on a petition filed against the Himachal High Court's decision of June 23, 2015. The petition challenging the High Court's decision was filed in the Supreme Court on September 23, 2015.
